In recent months the high street has become a hub of activity with North Midland Construction delivering the initial phase of work to improve the High Street.
The areas between Rodney Road and Cambray Place can now see the new locally sourced ‘forest pennant’ natural stone paving laid.
The paving is on track for completion in October prior to the new John Lewis store opening.
The area will also be complimented by raised beds, large trees and shrubs, incorporating new seating, a performance space and other street furniture.
The work will make the High Street a more attractive environment for shoppers and visitors to the town and will help support businesses. Residents and visitors are reminded that while works continue businesses along the High street and Cambray Place are open as usual.
Cllr Andrew McKinlay, cabinet member for development and safety, said: “We apologise for the disruption, however almost a million pounds has been invested into this area and it’s a pleasure to see our plans to revitalise the high street come to fruition.
“We are already in conversation with stakeholders to ensure that wear and tear to the new paving from vehicles is minimised. Once complete the improved environment will boost local businesses as it becomes a more attractive area for people to enjoy.”
Kevan Blackadder Cheltenham BID director said: “The BID has campaigned for this work to be carried out as a priority. While it has been disruptive for surrounding businesses in the short-term, it is a high-quality project that will benefit the entire area.
“We are keen to see further phases of work carried out in The Strand and Cambray Place and are encouraged that the borough council is committed to working with partners to achieve this.”
An investment of £929,000 was made by Cheltenham Borough Council and Gloucestershire County Council with some additional financial support for sustainable planting is being provided by the European Structural and Investment Fund.
