Tourism growth in Cheltenham

GWR – Rail Timetable Change
Members are reminded that GWR will be changing its timetables from Sunday (15th December). Along with increased capacity and earlier and later services on the London-Cheltenham Spa route, the update will also mean that the journey time for some services to/from London will now come down to under 2 hrs.

Marketing Cheltenham hosts press trip from top foodie magazine Olive In November we arranged a trip from popular food magazine, Olive. During the trip Olive’s writer visited several independent restaurants in Cheltenham and will be publishing an article on Cheltenham’s foodie scene in the coming weeks. Keep your eyes peeled! Christmas Light Switch-On
Working alongside Cheltenham BID, the team welcomed the characters of A Christmas Carol along with Santa for another successful Christmas Light Switch-On.  The three ghosts were well received with crowds awaiting their arrival at three start locations and following them throughout the town.  The finale, in front of Queen’s Hotel, saw Scrooge change his ways and with Santa and over 10,000 visitors the Christmas lights were switched on. 
 
In addition to a successful event, planning permission has been granted for an Ice Rink on Imperial Gardens for the festive period of 2020-21 and 2021-22. We will be securing an operator over the next few weeks so we can start planning Christmas 2020!

November digital roundup
November was the most popular month so far for the Visit Cheltenham website with over 127,800 page views and 65,000 website visits (compared to 43,000 visits in Nov’18). This year to date a whopping 1,182,000 pages have been viewed on the site.  
The What’s On section still continues to be the most popular section of the site so we thoroughly recommend you keep adding your events to drive visitors to your business. https://www.visitcheltenham.com/whats-on/add-your-event (A summary of the best events are always added to weekend and monthly events round up’s and shared extensively across social media and via our newsletter so this really is a great way to promote your event to a new audience).   

November was also a great month on social media for Visit Cheltenham with 561,700 impressions on the Facebook page alone plus 367,900 reach on our Facebook events (combined figure for Christmas markets, Light Switch-On, Late-night shopping).

Videos were particularly popular with 70,900 views including the two videos featuring the Christmas light switch-on and the ‘Experience the magic of Christmas in Cheltenham’ promotional video which were all boosted (promoted) to help drive visitors into town.
