March 2018…

March started with a bang, as our team braved the snow drifts to attend Explore GB in Newcastle. The event, which ran for three days starting March 1st, included more than 480 international travel buyers, looking for new destinations and product to supply to their clients. It was a brilliant start to a month, which involved:

  • joining The Cotswolds to promote Cheltenham as a destination at Explore GB. Despite a snowy start, the majority of delegates made it to Newcastle and we met with 55 delegations on a 1-to-1 basis during the two days networking, specifically discussing their desires to send tourists to Cheltenham and The Cotswolds. We also attended the networking lunches and dinners, and lost count after speaking to more than 280 individual travel and trade operators
  • continuing to develop the content on the newly relaunched Visit Cheltenham website, which continues to grow everyday. We also launched the new blogging platform, which now has almost daily new content being added
  • supporting 9 journalists with requests for information, images and itinerary ideas, including our first request for Christmas 2018 information!
  • developing a page on the Visit Cheltenham website for the Cheltenham Gift Card, encouraging visitors to spend local. Any business interested in accepting the Gift Card should contact Cheltenham BID. Any business that already accepts the Gift Card but is not listed on the website, should contact us to provide their details
  • redeveloping the content and design for the new Cheltenham Map & Guide which was printed and distributed ahead of the Easter Holidays. It features all the core tourist destinations within the town, as many local businesses as we could squeeze in and has been really well-received.   • supporting Cheltenham BID with the launch of Cheltenham Beauty Week 2018, including a pop-up shop in Regent Arcade and promotion of all the events and offers via the Visit Cheltenham website. The launch event attracted 1,583 people, featured 5 live demonstrations, saw 100 free treatments delivered and the Marketing Cheltenham team took a whopping 69,483 steps throughout the day. More than 25 local businesses are involved, delivering 73 events and offers between them
  • continuing our review of the Tourist Information Centre provision in Cheltenham as it stands, looking at what visitors need, and how the service can be improved. This month the team has reviewed Tourist Information best practice from around the world, identifying how it could be delivered in the future. There are now two surveys available asking tourism and visitor economy businesses to give us their input and opinions.
  • completing our support for an ITV filming opportunity for Ladies Day at Cheltenham Festival
  • continuing to represent Cheltenham as part of The Cotswolds, participating in the monthly Cotswold Tourism Executive Officers Group. A core focus at the moment is on The Great West Way, which is set to encourage tourists out of London and to Cheltenham and The Cotswolds
  • meeting with the author of a new Dystopian World novel; a cyber related thriller written around Cheltenham. The book includes many Cheltenham locations and we are now working on opportunities to use the book to encourage town visits and exploration. Watch this space…
  • distributing our first major call for content, encouraging businesses to let us know about anything relevant. This information is being used to support the website, the blog and all our social media channels, and provides an avenue for businesses to gain additional promotion
  • hosting the quarterly Hotels meeting, looking at opportunities to grow visitor numbers to the town, supplement quieter annual periods and provide networking opportunities
  • attending the Suffolk Traders Association AGM, providing local businesses with an update on Marketing Cheltenham and the opportunity it provides to businesses. There was a great vibe in the room, with lots of ideas on what can be done for the town, and a very informative evening for our team
  • welcoming on board all our new members, including Hilden Lodge B&B, Jury’s Inn and Holst Birthplace Museum.
