As part of the International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrations, Cheltenham Borough Council, the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham Trust and a range of other partners will be holding a fun event to celebrate women and to inspire the young people of Cheltenham and Gloucestershire to fulfil their dreams. Called ‘#PressforProgress Cheltenham’, this free event will be taking place at the Pittville Pump Room on Saturday 10 March at 12:30pm.
There will be the chance to hear from a number of inspirational women and to have a go at a range of activities including:
- Hear how Dr Jackie Bell, astrophysicist dealt with challenges in the BBC show Astronauts: Do you have what it takes?
- One of the daring Ice Maidens currently taking part in an expedition to ski coast to coast across Antarctica will be present to tell her story. Find out about the team’s progress at exicemaiden.com and come and ask all about it on the day.
- Participate in hands-on science and future tech-girl activities from Cheltenham Science Group and Imaginify.
- Try out sporting activities with #GlosGirlsCan and Cheltenham Town ladies football club.
- Find your perfect career by chatting to the Police, Fire and Rescue Service, University of Gloucestershire, local businesses and charities about what they do.
- Take part in arts activities to give us your views on women’s issues.
- Gloucestershire Police and Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service will show what it is like to work for them, with the opportunity to rescue someone from the Fire Service’s smoke house.
- To finish the afternoon fab fun local bands will be performing from 5-6pm.
Cllr Flo Clucas, cabinet member for healthy lifestyles at Cheltenham Borough Council, says: “Cheltenham is proud of its girls and young women and is delighted to be a part of this event, which was sparked by an idea from the girls of Pittville School last year.
“I am really pleased that partners have come together, to create a day that will see successful women talk about their journeys, debate the issues and stimulate change. And as it is the centenary celebration of some women getting the vote for the first time we will also have the elections team present to help our young people to register to vote. I hope this event will be the first of many and thank all those who have helped the organisation and those taking part. We would love to see as many young people as possible and all are welcome to celebrate International Women’s Day.”
